Young mathematicians break a record by solving a 2000-year-old math problem that was thought to be intractable.
Together, Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson, two teenage mathematicians from the United States, have solved a math problem that has been unanswered for more than two millennia.
Louisiana high school girls Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson presented their solution to a “impossible” arithmetic problem at the semi-annual meeting of the Southeastern Section of the American Mathematical Society.
According to reports, Calcea and Ne’Kiya were the only high school students present at the gathering, which was attended by math researchers from several colleges and universities around the US.

Both of them are in their senior year at St. Mary’s Academy in New Orleans. The teenage mathematicians asserted that they had proved Pythagoras’ theorem using trigonometry without the use of circular reasoning.
For more than two millennia, mathematicians from all around the world have maintained that this particular problem is impossible to solve. Additionally, they presented “An Impossible Proof of Pythagoras” at the Southeastern Conference of the American Mathematical Society.
“Honestly, there’s nothing like being able to do something that people don’t think young people can do,” Calcea told WWLTV, describing the emotion as “unmatched.” “You don’t see kids like us doing this stuff very often,” she continued.
The two young mathematicians credited their teachers for helping them succeed, saying they taught them to be hardworking and that their school’s motto, “No Excellence Without Hard Labor,” was ingrained in them.

According to Calcea and Ne’Kiya, they plan to enroll at Louisiana University in order to pursue degrees in environmental engineering and biochemistry.
