A young woman called Debby Ly made history by becoming the first person in her family to earn a university degree.
Debbie Ly graduated from the University of Redlands in California, USA, with a bachelor’s degree in International Business and Asian Studies.
Debbie posted a sweet video of herself wearing her graduation gown and stole on her parents to Instagram as part of her graduation announcement. expressing gratitude for all of their sacrifices and declaring with tears that the graduation is for them.
This goes beyond my graduation. In the video, she added, “I want to express my gratitude for your sacrifices and for supporting me while I went to school. It is ours.”

Debbie said that while she was glad to be graduating, she was more grateful to her parents for moving to the US so that she might have a brighter future.
“My amazing parents made it possible, and for that I am even more thankful than I am for my college degree. Both my parents are immigrants who left their own countries in search of a better life. They didn’t have the chance to go to college despite working all their life,” Debbie remarked.
To offer me a life they never had, they gave up everything. I choose to wear this traditional áo dài to honor my parents’ tenacity and hard work,” she continued.
She added that she is the first member of her family to enroll in and complete college. Debbie thanked them for their support and the ideals they taught her, and she dedicated her college degree to their perseverance and hard work.
I’m happy to report that, as a first-generation college student, I’ve helped them realize their goals. Thank you, Má and Ba, for teaching me the importance of perseverance and hard work, as well as for your constant love and support. “This is our graduation, not just mine,” she remarked.
