For African secondary school students who intend to continue further education and who want to have a significant effect as future leaders on the continent, Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is an intense academic and enrichment program.
The competition’s host university, Yale University, provides all of the program’s funding, including tuition, food, accommodation, and all course materials.

2025 Details of the Yale Young African Scholars Program:
The Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS) is a rigorous academic and enrichment program for secondary school students in Africa who want to become young leaders on the continent and intend to continue higher education.
Participants in both programs will improve their academic performance, get help applying for financial aid and university admission, and connect with young leaders from all around Africa. Although they can only attend one session, students can select their preferred session or sessions on the YYAS application form.
In addition to joining a network of young leaders from throughout Africa, participants will improve their academic abilities and get advice on career path alternatives and university admissions. Students will be matched with mentors after the program who will help them with the university admission process.
Qualifications for the Yale Young African Scholars Program in 2025:
The Yale Young African Scholars Program requires that you:
- To be eligible, a participant must be between the ages of 14 and 18 on the program days in 2025 (i.e. born between 18 August 2006 and 17 July 2011).
You have the ability to take part in a demanding academic program taught in English.
- have citizenship in or be a long-term resident of an African nation. Applications from refugees residing in African nations will also be accepted by YYAS.
- be enrolled in school in an African nation at the moment.
- Be enrolled in the tenth or eleventh grade, or its equivalent in another country.
Duration and Benefits of the 2025 Yale Young African Scholars Program
kids can engage in YYAS for free in order to make the program available to kids from all socioeconomic levels.
In addition to offering free housing, meals, and all academic curriculum materials, the YYAS Summit has no tuition ($0).

• Six-day YYAS Online College Prep Workshop: July 17–22, 2025
• 9-day YYAS Residential Leadership Summit in Kenya, August 9–17, 2025
Yale Young African Scholars Program Requirements
The following components of the application must be submitted by every student:
• Activities list Two “fast take” responses (280 characters each) One 400-word essay and one 200-word response
• One recommender (who will fill out the YYGS Recommendation Form* ONLY);
• An official transcript of education
• The application fee ($85 for Regular Decision and $70 for Early Action).
