International students can apply for the Friends of the University of Auckland Scholarships 2025–2026, which are partially sponsored. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for these awards. Each year, up to six scholarships worth up to $3,000 will be given out for undergraduate and graduate education.

In 2016, the University of Auckland created the International Student Excellence Scholarship. The Scholarship’s primary goal is to entice exceptional new overseas students to join in one-year or longer undergraduate or graduate teaching programs at the University of Auckland.

Friends of the University of Auckland (US) provides funding for the Award, which was created in 2013. The Award’s primary goal is to promote scholarly contacts between the United States of America and New Zealand.

Friends of the University of Auckland Scholarships will offer:

  • Up to six scholarships worth up to $3,000 each for undergraduate and graduate education will be given out each year.
  • The award will be given as a tuition, travel, or support grant.

 

Qualifications for the Friends of the University of Auckland Scholarship Program

Candidates must meet all of the requirements listed below in order to be eligible for Friends of the University of Auckland Scholarships:
• English is the required language.
• Countries of Eligibility: US residents and University of Auckland students
• The Friends of the University of Auckland US/NZ Exchange Award will be the name of the award.Depending on funds availability, up to six awards, each lasting a year, will be given out each year. The awards will range in value from $1,000 to $3,000 NZD. Depending on financing and applicant quality, outgoing students may receive up to three awards, while inbound students may receive up to three.

An applicant must i) be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States and ii) have paid or made arrangements to pay the fees for full-time enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree or diploma or a Certificate of Proficiency (COPOS or COPEX) at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, in order to be eligible for an inbound award. To be eligible for the award, a candidate must have a US grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.7, with 4 representing a “A” grade.

To qualify for an outbound award, a candidate must: i) be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand; ii) have completed or be working toward completing the requirements of an undergraduate or graduate degree at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland (and may or may not have graduated) by the deadline; and iii) have been offered undergraduate or postgraduate enrollment, or have been accepted for an approved exchange or short-term program at a US university of at least equal standing to Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland (see Note II). A GPA of at least 7.4 is necessary to be eligible for the award.

Academic merit and the applicant’s personal qualities as evaluated by a personal statement will be the basis for selection. The University of Auckland Council will make the award on the recommendation of a Selection Committee made up of two International Committee representatives nominated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Engagement) and one Alumni Relations & Development representative. The award will be paid in one installment upon confirmation of enrollment in an undergraduate or postgraduate program, an approved exchange or short-term program at a US university (outbound Award), or a degree, diploma, or Certificate of Proficiency (COPOS or COPEX) at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland (inbound Award) (see Notes III and IV).

As long as the guidelines for that scholarship, award, or grant allow it and the University of Auckland Council is notified and gives its approval, the award may be given out concurrently with any other scholarship, award, or grant. It is the awardee’s duty to notify the Scholarships Office of all other grants, scholarships, and awards they have earned and for which they have been paid in addition to this award.If it is found that no candidate satisfies the requirements and/or has enough merit, the University of Auckland Council is not required to grant an award.

Applications close with the Scholarships Office on August 15 for students enrolling in Semester Two of the current year at the University of Auckland or US fall semester, and November 6 for students enrolling in Semester One of the following year at the University of Auckland or US winter/spring semester, subject to consultation with the Donor, provided that there is no deviation from the Award’s primary purpose.

Remarks
• According to current law, this scholarship is tax-free. This tax-free result is not guaranteed by the University of Auckland.
• Current, widely accepted university ranking tables, including The Times Higher Education Supplement World University Rankings, will be used to evaluate the US institution’s standing.
• In compliance with the Guidelines for students traveling overseas (see https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/students/forms-policies-and-guidelines/student-policies-and-guidelines/student-travel-guidelines.html), recipients of an outbound award are required to register their travel arrangements with 360 International.

As long as funds under this award are utilized to cover living expenses for the awardee during their studies or to cover expenses related to their program of study, they are tax-free. The Award will be terminated for noncompliance with this regulation.Recipients must adhere to the Award’s rules and inform the Scholarships Office of any changes to their enrollment or financial situation. If it can be proven that an awardee is not abiding by these rules, Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, has the right to cancel the award and demand that the money be returned.
