In collaboration with the African Union, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs organizes the United Nations Fellowship Program.

For the period of the United Nations International Law Fellowship Program, each fellow is eligible to receive a stipend to cover moderate living expenditures and other living expenses, a return ticket (economy class) from their home country to Geneva, and basic health insurance.

The 2025 United Nations International Law Fellowship for Africa is now accepting applications.

Qualifications for the 2025 United Nations International Law Fellowship

You must: 

  • possess a legal education and work experience in the subject of international law in order to be eligible for the United Nations Fellowship Program.
  • Fluency in the language of instruction (English in 2025) is another need for candidates.
  • The chosen applicants must attest that they are capable of attending the entire course.
  • There is space for up to 20 people in the regional course.
  • In 2025, the Fellowship Program will be administered in French. It is necessary to speak and write French fluently.

Advantages of the 2025 United Nations Fellowship Program

• From June 30 to August 1, 2025, the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, will host the 2025 Fellowship Program. The language of instruction will be French.For individuals who are awarded a fellowship, the grant will pay for training materials, lodging, food, medical insurance, and travel. The policies and procedures governing the administration of United Nations fellowships will also provide fellowship recipients with a small stipend to help with other living expenses.

  • Additionally, there will be a cap on the number of spots available to self-funded participants. Self-funded participants cover all of the costs of attending the Regional Course, with the exception of training materials (e.g. transport, medical insurance, lodging and living expenses).
  • The Regional Courses offer top-notch instruction from eminent academics and professionals in a variety of fundamental areas of international law, in addition to unique topics of regional significance.Furthermore, because the training is participatory, participants can share ideas and experiences, which fosters improved comprehension and collaboration on regional legal issues.

 

Curriculum for the 2025 United Nations Fellowship Program

Introduction to international law, treaty law, international responsibility, international peace and security, peaceful resolution of international disputes, diplomatic and consular law, international human rights law, international humanitarian law, international criminal law, international environmental law, law of the sea, international trade law, and international investment law are some of the subjects that may be discussed in the seminars and lectures that the Codification Division has organized.
