Qualifications for the United Nations University Scholarship in 2024:
In order to be eligible for the United Nations University Scholarship, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:
- Applicants must be individuals from underdeveloped nations who can prove they require financial support;
Applicants who are already enrolled in other postgraduate degree programs are not eligible for the scholarship, nor are those who are now in Japan on a working visa. This includes those who have already earned a master’s degree from a university other than UNU-IAS; additionally, candidates are not permitted to hold multiple scholarships at the same time.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants for the Master of Science in Sustainability must have fulfilled the following prerequisites by the application deadline:
• A bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) in a sustainability-related field in line with the UNU-IAS thematic areas from an accredited university or other higher education establishment.
• Proficiency in English and a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 2.8 or above on a 4.0 scale (or 70% on a 100% scale).
Regarding Candidates for PhD Programs
Candidates for the PhD in Sustainability Science must have met the following requirements by the application deadline in order to be considered:
- A master’s degree (or its equivalent) in a sustainability-related discipline from an accredited university or other higher education establishment.
- After earning a university degree (full time equivalent), a minimum of two years of professional field experience relevant to UNU-IAS research areas must be obtained.
- At least one master’s degree must have a GPA of 2.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or 70% on a 100% scale; and
- English language proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS) – waived for English-speaking students

Resona Bank Scholarship
• The UNU Rector’s Scholarship pays for living expenses for a maximum of 24 months and covers the entire cost of tuition. The monthly allowance is 130,000 JPY (subject to change). Additionally, a research allowance and a set amount of money are reimbursed for travel expenses to and from Japan.
Japan Foundation for UNU (jfUNU) Scholarship
• For a maximum of 24 months, the jfUNU scholarship offers a monthly support package of 120,000 JPY. Scholarship recipients may be exempt from paying tuition.
Scholarship Program between the Asian Development Bank and Japan (ADB–JSP)
• The scholarship will cover full tuition, books, medical and accident insurance, a subsistence allowance that includes housing allowance, a thesis research allowance, and an instrumental allowance.
• For the academic year 2022–2023, a single person’s monthly subsistence payment, which includes housing allowance, is JPY 147,000 (subject to change).
•The most direct flight from the scholar’s home country to Tokyo Narita International Airport will also be offered in economy class.
