For postgraduate studies in the UK, the SENSS Scholarship offers a stipend of £19,237 per year (2024/25 academic year rates) (plus an additional £2,000 per year if you study at an institution in London).

Details of the SENSS ESRC Studentship:
The South and East Network for Social Sciences competition for 2024–2025 is now accepting applications.
Every academic year, SENSS will provide these studentships to eight universities across our six transdisciplinary themes.
What is a student-led studentship in SENSS?
- Students work on a self-conceived research topic under the direction of a knowledgeable academic supervising team.
- The project might entail collaborating with a company, nonprofit, or think tank that gives researchers access to data, study participants, equipment, extra financing for their studentship, a second supervisor, and/or a placement.
Qualifications for the 2025 SENSS ESRC Studentship
Please take note of the following requirements to be eligible for the SENSS ESRC Studentship:
- Residential requirements: all applicants, irrespective of domicile or nationality, are eligible for studentships at all eight SENSS universities as well as six SENSS interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary pathways. However, there are just a few studentships available to international applicants—roughly ten per year.The complete residential eligibility guidelines are available here.
In order to apply for a Masters plus PhD (+4.5-year) program, you must have the following credentials or work experience: a Bachelor’s degree (Honors).
• In order to apply for a PhD solely (+3.5-year award), you must have the research skills necessary to finish your thesis effectively, as well as credentials or work experience comparable to a master’s degree.
• You can apply for SENSS funding if you have already begun your PhD, but only if you haven’t finished a significant amount of your coursework.
Advantages of the 2025 SENSS Scholarship
The following benefits are included in studentships for the term of the award:
An annual maintenance allowance of £19,237 that is tax-free and covers your living expenses. There is an extra £2,000 provided year as London Weighting for students attending London-based universities because living expenses are greater there. You will not be eligible for the London Weighting payment if you opt to reside in London even though you are not enrolled in a university there;
Costs: For the term of their financial award, no student receiving SENSS money, domestic or foreign, will be required to pay any tuition fees to an institution.
Availability of money for research training support; additionally, access to additional funds to support language instruction, fieldwork, and institutional visits abroad.
• The ability to obtain extra money for fieldwork in the UK or abroad, study abroad opportunities, language instruction, and research.

How to Apply (Step by Step) for the SENSS Scholarship 2025
Interested and eligible candidates should do the following in order to apply for the 2025 SENSS Scholarship:
- Choose the professor at the SENSS university that you would want to collaborate with, making sure that your research topic falls under one of the six SENSS Themes.
- After that, get in touch with the academic—your potential supervisor—directly to talk about collaborating. Alternatively, contact the university’s SENSS Operational Lead if you are unclear who to approach; they might be able to help you locate a supervisor.
- Apply for a spot at the SENSS university of your choice if, following a conversation with your prospective supervisor, they are open to working with you.
- You must apply for SENSS financing for your studies after submitting an application for admission to your home university.
