It is mandatory for all Shawn Carter Scholars to “give back” by mentoring younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars and performing community service.

Despite several personal and socioeconomic obstacles, such as adolescent motherhood, past incarceration, interrupted education, poverty, and homelessness, they all have a strong desire to seek higher education. They are industrious, resilient, and resolute people who seek to positively impact their local and global communities, and they look to the SCSF to help them realize their goals.

Qualifications for the Shawn Carter Scholarship
The candidate must meet each of the standards listed below in order to be eligible for the Shawn Carter Scholarship:
English is the required language; US citizens or permanent residents are eligible; and students enrolled in their first undergraduate program:
- Students 25 years of age or younger;
- Students enrolled in two- or four-year undergraduate programs;
- Students with GEDs;
- Students enrolled in vocational or trade schools;
- Students with a minimum GPA of 2.0;
- Students with household incomes under $75,000 USD
