Nigerian monarch, Lamido Sanusi bags PhD in Law at the University of London
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a Nigerian king, has earned a doctorate in law from the University of London in the United Kingdom.
Following his Viva Voce, Lamido Sanusi, the Emir (ruler) of a Northern Nigerian state, recently received a PhD in Islamic law from the University of London in the United Kingdom.
In many academic institutions, viva voce—also referred to as an oral examination or thesis defense—is an essential step in the PhD process.

In front of a panel of experts, typically consisting of examiners and scholars in the subject, a candidate presents and defends their research thesis as part of a formal assessment.
A video showcasing Sanusi’s accomplishment was released on Twitter by the Mornach office. During a virtual encounter with his examiners, the king is seen in the video receiving congratulations.
“Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform with Focus on the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco” is the subtitle of the Emir’s thesis. Without any changes, his thesis was accepted.
After being overthrown as King in 2020, Lanusi, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, enrolled in the Ph.D. program and moved to the UK to focus on his studies.
In 2020, he received a visiting fellowship at the University of Oxford’s African Studies Centre. Additionally, Sanusi has an honorary doctorate in finance from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.
After graduating from Ahmadu Bello University with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1981, Sanusi went on to acquire a master’s degree in the same field. He graduated from the Africa International University in Khartoum, Sudan, with a second bachelor’s degree in Islamic studies and fiqh.
