Qualifications for the National Fellowship of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation

In order to qualify for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship, candidates need to fulfill the following requirements:

English is a required language, and all nations worldwide are eligible.
A Ph.D. candidate who plans to finish their dissertation by the end of the Fellowship year is required to apply. A post-doctoral scholarship is not what this is. Non-citizens of the United States may apply.

  • Every Fellow must attend two conferences, one in the spring and one in the fall. Presenting research and conclusions to the Jefferson Scholars Foundation and University of Virginia academic community is made possible via the conferences. Specifically, the spring conference offers a chance to get input from mentors who are also present. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation covers the cost of both conferences.
  • With the exception of the Jefferson Scholars/Hagley Library Dissertation Fellowship, which necessitates residency at the Hagley Library during the academic year, all Fellows are invited but not obliged to reside at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation. For the spring and autumn conferences, Fellows who want to live in residence will receive an extra stipend of $1,500 to cover their travel and housing expenses, with the exception of the Jefferson Scholars/Hagley Library Fellow.
  • Regardless of where they live, all Fellows are encouraged to engage with and support the Jefferson Scholars Foundation’s interdisciplinary community.
