Details of the Iowa State University Scholarship
The Borel Global Fellowship Program aims to improve the health and wealth of Sub-Saharan African subsistence farmers while eradicating food and nutrition insecurity.
This will be accomplished by training Iowa State University scientists who will live and work in Sub-Saharan Africa as knowledge leaders.
The Borel Global Fellows Program began in 2018 with a grant from ISU alums Jim (’78 agriculture business) and Marcia (’78 family environment) Borel.
Qualifications for the Borel Global Fellowship
You must:
- be accepted into a graduate program at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences;
- be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African nation;
- pledge to pursue graduate studies in order to prepare for a career that will contribute to food security in Sub-Saharan Africa;
- finish the majority of your graduate research in Sub-Saharan Africa; and
- show that you intend to work and reside in Sub-Saharan Africa after completing your graduate studies in order to be eligible for the Borel Global Fellowship.
Iowa State University Scholarship 2025 Benefits
- Graduate student stipends (or a combination of a partial stipend and research support) are offered up to $25,000 year per student.
- Additional support is available for travel to and from Africa for research purposes; funding durations for MS and PhD students are up to 30 months and 42 months, respectively.

- A completed application will include a copy of the student’s objective statement, a CV, and a cover letter from the major faculty.
- The key professor’s pledge to support the student’s study in Sub-Saharan Africa and to supply the remaining necessary funds (usually tuition, fees, and research expenses) will be covered in the cover letters.
- Graduate students are not permitted to submit applications directly. Professors at Iowa State University are the only ones who can apply for support for graduate students who have already been accepted into a program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
