Details of the 2025 Ghent University Doctoral Scholarship:
Promising PhD students from developing nations who want to complete half of their research at Ghent University (the “North”) and half at a university in a developing nation are eligible to receive PhD “sandwich” scholarships from Ghent University with funding from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF).
One of the top universities in Belgium is Ghent University, which is ranked among the top 100. More than 200 courses are offered by our 11 faculties, which also carry out extensive research in a variety of scientific fields.

Qualifications for the 2025 Ghent University Scholarship:
Applicants must be international students from underdeveloped nations in order to be eligible for the award.
- Applications must be submitted using the forms that have been given for this purpose; the Research Council will evaluate them.
- Candidates should be aware that the scholarship is extremely competitive and that their selection will be determined by the outcomes of their bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
- Doctoral projects and the topic’s applicability to development and capacity building will also be taken into consideration when evaluating applicants.
- The local institute’s scientific and scholarly disposition; the collaboration between Ghent University and the local institutes; and the scientific and scholarly potential of the promoter’s research group or groups.
Duration and Benefits of the 2025 Ghent University Doctoral Scholarship
- A 24-month PhD scholarship at Ghent University;
- A bench fee of €310 per month for research conducted in Ghent plus a €8,000 travel budget to cover (some of) the operational costs of research at Ghent University.
It should be noted that the following mobility plan is required:
- Students must begin and finish their three to twelve-month research stay in Ghent.
- The initial research visit to Ghent must begin between October 1, 2022, and February 28, 2023.
- Between the initial and final research stays in Ghent, a minimum of 24 months of locally supported research stay in the South must be planned.
