Chicago, USA: Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program 2026
International students who wish to develop into the next generation of business reporting leaders can apply for the Journalists in Residence Program. Since its start in March 2017, the Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program has provided emerging journalists from all over the world working in various sorts of media with a life-changing educational experience. Its goal is to mold the upcoming class of business reporting officials.
During the roughly 12-week program, which will be held on our Hyde Park campus, chosen participants will observe classes, take part in activities, collaborate with classmates, and mingle with the university’s top academics. At the Chicago Booth, attendees will select their own classes. Courses like Crony Capitalism with Professor Luigi Zingales and The Firm and the Non-Market Environment with Professor Marianne Bertrand are two examples.

The following are expected of program participants:
• Audit three classes;
• Attend and actively participate in classes, completing all assigned readings and assignments;
• Take part in Stigler lectures, lunches, and social events, as well as other events the center recommends;
• Sign a letter of agreement with the center attesting to the mutual understanding of the program’s expectations and guidelines.

Scholarship Reports
The following advantages are offered to recipients of the Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program:
• Payment for SEVIS and visa application fees, as well as economy-class airfare to and from Chicago; a stipend* of $12,000 to cover living expenses during the 12-week program
Opportunities to work with Booth faculty, students, and other program participants; training in business fundamentals at Chicago Booth; attendance at seminars and workshops at Chicago Booth and throughout the university; a chance to write for the ProMarket publication; a dedicated study area; and a certificate of participation upon program completion
*For overseas participants, up to 14% of the stipend may be withheld in taxes. For further details, please refer to your nation’s tax treaty with the United States.
Qualifications for the Journalists in Residence Program at the Stigler Center
The following requirements must be fulfilled by applicants in order to be eligible for the Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program:

• Journalists in the workforce with a few years of media experience.
How Can I Apply for the Journalists in Residence Program at the Stigler Center?
To be eligible for this scholarship, please take the following actions:

• A CV or resume
• Three news stories that have been published
• Send in a copy of three news stories that have been published, ideally in English. The original articles should be supplied with a translation if they are not in English.
• For journalists covering radio or television, please provide English transcriptions and links to your audio and video materials in a Word or PDF document.
Individual essays (no more than 500 words)
• Explain why you are interested in the program and what you want to gain from it.
• Give us some details about your background, your interest in political economy and economics, and your learning objectives.
• Two recommendation letters
• Evidence of fluency in English (if appropriate)
• Non-native English speakers are required to provide evidence of their English proficiency, which is exempted if they earned their undergraduate or graduate degrees in an English-speaking nation or at a college or institution where English is the main medium of teaching. Proof of English competence examples include:
Certifications or results from standardized tests (e.g., Cambridge, Duolingo, SAT, ACT, TOEFL, IELTS, etc.)
• A certificate or diploma of English proficiency granted by a recognized national educational institution
• Experience working in an English-speaking workplace with a manager’s letter attesting to language proficiency
