As the overall best student, a brilliant Nigerian woman receives six accolades and earns a Microbiology degree with honors.
Aneke Chinwendu Francisca, a talented Nigerian woman, graduated with honors from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Nigeria, with a degree in microbiology. As her department’s top student overall, she received six honors.
Chiwendu graduated from the University of Nigeria Nsukka in Enugu, Nigeria, with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. She was the university’s top graduating student in the Microbiology program.
On her LinkedIn profile, she announced her graduation from college and her induction into the Nigeria Society for Microbiology.
She was the best student in five of her major courses and the best student in her three years, in addition to being the department’s overall best-graduating student.

Chiwendu received awards for excellence in the fields of industrial, food, pharmaceutical, medical, and environmental microbiology. In addition, she received a prize for having the highest total grade points for her first, second, and third years in college.
For her undergraduate thesis, she investigated environmentally friendly substitutes for chemical pesticides while she was a student. Chiwendu stated that entomopathogenic fungi, a biological method of controlling insects, were the main focus of her research.
She talked about researching these tiny organisms on their own, testing their protease production, figuring out the various beneficial compounds they can produce, and looking at the genetic composition of the most promising one.
Chiwendu expressed her excitement about working on a topic that could potentially help reduce the negative effects of chemical insecticide use, including environmental pollution, the many health risks associated with insects, and chemical persistence in her surroundings.
She thanked her family, friends, and the entire staff of UNN’s Department of Microbiology, particularly her amazing supervisor, Uchenna Oyeagu, whose advice and encouragement were invaluable during her academic career.
Chiwendu expressed her excitement for the day when other fungal-based remedies can be investigated as substitutes for chemical pesticides.
