Only nationals of Commonwealth nations, excluding South Africans, shall be eligible for the UP Commonwealth Doctoral Scholarship.
• Candidates must start their studies in 2025 and attend the University of Pretoria.
• The applicant must have applied to attend UP for the 2025 school year.
• Every applicant has to have found a possible supervisor.
• All applicants must have provided the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) with their academic records.

Before submitting an application to UP for admission for the 2025 academic year, candidates must have finished their postgraduate or master’s degree at least two years earlier.
• This scholarship is not available to applicants who are older than 40.
• Masters and PhD students who are enrolled in or have previously attended the University of Pretoria are not eligible to apply.

• This doctoral scholarship will be worth R184 000 annually. The following educational expenses must be paid with this sum:

o A return ticket to one’s home country upon program completion, as verified by the faculty.

o A shuttle service from OR Tambo International Airport to Pretoria upon arrival in South Africa, and back from Pretoria to OR Tambo International Airport upon completion.

o The applicant will get a reimbursement for the UP application fee, medical aid charge, and study visa expenses upon evidence of receipt.

  • Supplementary Funds:

o The recipient of the Commonwealth Scholarship is eligible to receive additional external bursaries, grants, or scholarships up to a total award value of R300,000.00 annually, including this scholarship.

o The main prize must be the UP PhD Commonwealth Scholarship.

 

Required Records for the University of Pretoria’s Commonwealth Scholarship

Candidates must be prepared to submit the following paperwork in order to apply:

 

  • The 2025 student number, also known as the UP Online application reference “T” number, is given to applicants by UP via their UP Portal.
  • A letter of motivation from the potential PhD advisor you have selected from UP. The availability of research money must be confirmed by the aforementioned motive.
  • A one-page A4 outline of the suggested research project.

The Curriculum Vitae (CV) should not exceed three pages.
