After 65 years of service and community service, 93-year-old police officer L.C. “Buckshot” Smith has finally resigned from the force.

Smith, a member of the Camden Police Department, was the oldest police officer in Arkansas, USA. Prior to becoming a police officer at the age of 30, he worked in a gas station, a funeral home, and furniture sales.

He stated that he initially worked for free at the Camden Police Department at the University. “For thirty years, I worked with an officer who never issued a ticket. He said that I had to do all of his writing for him.

Smith eventually moved to the Ouachita County Sheriff’s Office, where he retired at age 81. However, he was requested to return after just a few months.

He remarked, “They said I had too much history, knowledge, and understanding to let it die.” As a result, he decided not to retire permanently.

Smith has worked as a responder and a court bailiff over the years, ensuring the safety of the community and Camden’s yearly celebrations and events.

Smith mentored younger policemen throughout his final days in law enforcement. He claimed that although he had intended to work for the remainder of his life, he felt it was time to retire following a fall.

“I was unable to walk when I woke up. I decided to resign at that point,” he remarked. Smith encourages the remaining law enforcement personnel to treat everyone the way they would like to be treated.

“We would have a better community, city, and state if all law enforcement did that,” he said, adding that all police officers would treat people the way they would like to be treated.

Community residents and coworkers celebrated Smith’s dedication at a special celebration held by the Camden Police Department after his retirement.

Smith said he hasn’t gone fishing in about 50 years, but he still plans to hunt and fish when he retires.
