A young African woman earns a bachelor’s degree in accounting after surviving cancer.
Despite fighting cancer, a young woman named Monica Sithole has earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.
Monica, who was born in South Africa, graduated from the University of Witwatersrand with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. At the same university, she also obtained a Cumulative Translation Adjustment (CTA) in Accounting degree.
According to Women Power Africa, at the age of 22, she received a diagnosis of stage 4 hematological blood cancer. She claimed that because her diagnosis was life-threatening, she had to begin treatment right away.
By the time of my diagnosis, I had already come to terms with the fact that I was about to start a journey that would change my life, she said. “I felt defeated because my diagnosis process was such a struggle with biopsies that kept coming back inconclusive,” she said.
According to Monica, she received four distinct chemotherapy treatments, including vinblastine, doxorubicin, bleomycin, and dacin. She expressed her concern that she might need to undergo radiation therapy in order to eradicate any remaining cancerous cells.
She stated, “I didn’t want to go through another crazy journey, being radiation, because chemotherapy was already exhausting enough on its own.”
After undergoing four operations, five scans, and twelve chemotherapy sessions, Monica was formally deemed cancer-free. and, nine months later, was formally deemed cancer-free. She said that although she had previously kept her illness to herself, she was able to talk about it after receiving therapy.
“I kept asking myself how I might help people by using what I had gone through. In addition, I was working to heal both physically and psychologically from the trauma I had endured both before and during the treatment. I am thus only at ease discussing it at this time,” she stated.
She claimed that the greatest source of encouragement for her to persevere despite her illness was her parents. Monica said she feels invincible and is prepared to go after all of her dreams.
