A talented Nigerian ecologist who won a Mastercard Scholarship moves to Canada permanently
On social media, Hammed A. Akande, a talented Nigerian ecologist, has celebrated moving to Canada as a permanent resident after receiving a Mastercard Foundation Scholarship.
In 2016, Osun State University in Nigeria awarded Hammed Akande a First Class Degree in Wildlife Management. He was able to enroll in a Master’s program in Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) at Mcgill University in Canada between 2018 and 2019 after winning the Mcgill University Mastercard Foundation Scholarship.
The Mastercard Foundation annually grants scholarships to McGill University in Canada through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, which enables students from all around the world to pursue master’s degrees there. Additionally, the Mastercard Foundation funds educational funding at a number of other colleges in Africa, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
The McGill University website states that this year’s applications are closed, and those who are interested are encouraged to wait until they are reopened.
After graduating from McGill University with a Master’s degree, Hammed Akande enrolled at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to pursue a PhD in spatial ecology.
In addition, he works concurrently at Concordia University in Canada as a Graduate Research Assistant. Hammed Akande eventually becomes a permanent resident of Canada after three years and four months.
Celebrating his latest achievement, Hammed Akande said: “Today (after 3yrs & 4months), I became a PERMANENT RESIDENT OF CANADA- Alhamdulilah”
He narrated that he moved into Canada with only $100 and a Fully Funded Mastercard Foundation Scholarship in 2018.

I came to this country on a fully-funded MSc Scholarship, thanks to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and the MCF program at McGill University.
He thanked everyone involved in his success story, including his PhD supervisor at Concordia University. “Many thanks to my PhD supervisor (Prof Pedro Peres-Neto) for all his support & mentorship for my ongoing PhD and Eliane Ubalijoro for writing my second reference letter – Merci beaucoup.
” He said, “This is to encourage someone out there that your dreams are VALID – we shall celebrate you soon.”
