A remarkable 43-year-old man successfully battles meningitis to earn an engineering degree.
Sinethemba Bili, a remarkable 43-year-old man, has encountered difficulties in his pursuit of a bachelor’s degree from the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in South Africa.
Having worked as a sound engineer in the music industry for more than 20 years, Sinethemba made the decision to enroll at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in order to earn a Bachelor’s degree that would validate his proficiency in the area.
At the age of 37, Sinethemba enrolled in a Bachelor of Music program despite his advanced age. “Music has always been a passion of mine, and I wanted to educate myself in its field.” I finally discovered my niche when I enrolled in the UFH Music Department,” Sinethemba remarked.

However, he became ill during his second year of university studies and was given a diagnosis of meningitis, which is an inflammation (swelling) of the membranes that envelope the brain and spinal cord.
I was writing my dissertation at the time, so it was challenging for me. I had to stop studying and concentrate on my health,” Sinethemba recalled.
After two months in the hospital, he recuperated at home for a few more months. He made the decision to resume his studies in 2019. “I was determined to continue and finish my studies, so even though I wasn’t fully recovered, I enrolled again,” he stated.
Shortly after his return, Sinethemba was hired as a tutor in the Music Department because he was an outstanding student and an authority in the subject.
After overcoming meningitis, which nearly prevented him from attending school, he earned his bachelor’s degree. His beautiful wife, whom he considers his biggest supporter, was with him on his graduation day.
