A brilliant African woman with a 3.94/4.00 CGPA in biochemistry is the university’s top graduating student, and she celebrates her accomplishment.

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ghana’s top graduating student is Darlington Ekua Acquah, a bright Ghanaian woman.

She became the valedictorian and best student overall at UHAS’s 9th Congregation in 2024 after earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with an outstanding total grade point average of 3.94 out of 4.00.

Her remarkable academic career and commitment to greatness were highlighted on the official UHAS Facebook page, which hailed her success. Ekua established a high bar for her peers to meet by remaining the best student in her class for two years in a row.

Ekua excelled academically and extracurricularly during her time as a student.

Her teams received gold medals for developing creative synthetic biology solutions to environmental problems in the esteemed International Genetic Evolution Machine (iGEM) and International Directed Evolution competitions, in which she competed.

She also gained international recognition in her field in 2024 when she represented UHAS in the University of Tsukuba’s 14th Summer Research Programme.

Ekua demonstrated her capacity to strike a balance between professional development and academic achievement by completing an 8-week Virtual Assistant course with ALX Africa despite her demanding academic schedule.

Ekua faced difficulties along the way. She received financial assistance for the last two years of her education from Professor Margaret Gyapong, who donated the Dora Gertrude Quaye Memorial Fund for Brilliant but Needy Female Students.

Ekua has a strong interest in science and how it might help solve the riddles of the natural world. According to her, “the glory of man is to uncover the hidden mysteries of God, and science reveals the true nature of God.”

With this mindset, she sees a time when her knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry can help improve healthcare, especially in the areas of genomics and biotechnology.

She also wants to encourage the upcoming generation of scientists to push the limits of discovery and follow their passions.
