Ben Bishop Nyanihorba Ayamba, a young African guy, is the first person with vision impairments to receive a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) in Ghana.
At the 7th session of UCC’s 56th Congregation, Dr. Ayamba, who received his PhD in Guidance and Counseling, was one of 103 PhD candidates honored.
UCC Chancellor Dr. Sir Sam Jonah gave Dr. Ayamba a $2,000 cash reward in appreciation of his outstanding accomplishment. The honor demonstrates how much the university values his tenacity and resolve.
The path of Dr. Ayamba is proof of the strength of tenacity and resolve. His life changed drastically in 1995 after he finished his basic education since he lost his sight in an Accra vehicle accident.
He showed incredible fortitude in the face of this devastating blow.After receiving rehabilitation at the Akropong School for the Blind, he pursued further schooling and graduated from the Presbyterian Training College with a Certificate A.
At Ntonso L/A Junior High School, he started his teaching career. Later, he worked as a tutor at Mampong Technical College of Education.
Dr. Ayamba stayed dedicated to academic excellence throughout his career. He graduated from UCC with a Bachelor of Education in Psychology, majoring in English. Later, he graduated from UCC with a Master of Philosophy in Guidance and Counseling.
In January 2024, his PhD in Guidance and Counseling was successfully completed, marking the culmination of his unwavering commitment to learning. This accomplishment represents the culmination of an incredible journey that overcome many obstacles to succeed academically.
