A 36-year-old blind woman who struggled in school eventually succeeds and gets a PhD at a US university.
Despite facing educational obstacles due to her disability, Alanka Babb, 36, has earned a Ph.D. from Liberty University.
In an Insider post, Alanka Babby, a native of Guyana, South America, revealed that she was born blind and grew up with her grandmother in one of the poorest nations in Guyana, where education was not given priority.
After the death of her Grandmother, She had to move in with her other relatives and had the opportunity to attend a neighborhood school where her teachers were underqualified.
Her visual issue presented Babb with greater challenges than her lack of a traditional schooling. Despite having to sit in front of the class, she stated that she still did not want a solution because her school did not provide accommodations for children with disabilities.

Babb climbed school levels in spite of her visual impairments and inability to read what her teachers wrote on the chalkboard. When a teacher discovered that she couldn’t read, she remembered feeling ashamed.
She said that the humiliation marked a significant turning point in her life. Babb claimed that in addition to becoming more committed to improving her reading skills, she also borrowed books from the school library and found them difficult to read.
Even though I had trouble pronouncing many words, I quickly discovered that I loved reading. Despite my visual impairments, I continued to study and challenge myself academically as I grew older. “I graduated from college in Guyana despite not having any support for my eye condition,” she stated.~
According to Babb, she moved to America at the age of 28 in order to continue her schooling, but she had doubts about her choice because of her deteriorating vision. She later learned, however, that the Disabilities Act in America requires colleges to offer students disability-support services.
I had access to my instructors’ lectures prior to class and additional time for testing at the institution. I began to flourish with these extra facilities,” she remarked.
After graduating from the University of Guyana with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology, Babb went on to earn a Master’s degree in Counseling Education. Despite having a disability and coming from a low-income family, she is now 36 years old and holds a doctorate in education from Liberty University in the United States.
