A 34-year-old man surprises his mother with her first flight after realizing her dream of becoming a pilot.
In addition to eventually becoming a pilot, Jerome Lawrence, 34, took his mother home on her very first flight following the passing of his father.
After their father passed away, Jerome, a Tobago-born pilot for United Airlines, surprised his mother by giving them a journey home. After starting flight lessons at the age of 17, he told GMA that it took him years to realize his longtime dream of becoming a pilot. T
He acknowledges his parents, late father John Lawrence and mother Gwendoline Lawrence, for all of his accomplishments, saying they were aware of his desire and encouraged him. Therefore, he seized the opportunity to surprise his mother by taking her back to their hometown.
My parents saw the desire and always wanted me to become an airline pilot. It was always my aim to do that because they supported me through everything,” he stated.
Given that his father passed away on Christmas Day only four months ago and that he was unable to fly him while he was alive, Jerome said he took advantage of the chance and did not wait “for the perfect moment” to fly his 62-year-old mother.
He executed the surprise onboard United Flight 2353, which flew from Houston to Trinidad’s Port of Spain, with the assistance of his colleagues United Airlines employees.

“The biggest thing was her seeing me before we got to the plane. But everyone from the gate agents to the flight attendants, even my captain, everyone was like, ‘OK, cool. Let’s make this happen,” he said. During the flight, he made a special announcement over the public address system, which was caught on camera in a video that went viral on social media.
He introduced his mother adding that it was his first time flying his mom and also his first time returning to the Caribbean islands in 17 years.
“It’s a special moment for me I’d like to share with you guys. There’s a lady in here — she’s in first class — is my mom. “I can’t even begin to express how important it is to share this moment with you. It’s been a long road for us,” Jerome said.
”My dad should have been here on this flight. But he decided to fly higher than all of us. He’s up there with the other angels watching over us, and so, again, thank you for flying United. Thank you for being here with us,”’ he added.
Jerome’s message to all parents at the end of his surprise address was to always support and encourage their children to follow their ambitions.
“I wouldn’t be here flying you down to Port of Spain without the support of my mother and father, so keep encouraging your kids to be great and do whatever they want to,” he urged.
According to Jerome’s mother, she was completely unaware that her son had prepared a major surprise, which almost overwhelmed her. Gwendoline remarked, “I told my niece that it would be the first time I was traveling out and going home to no one, so I was really emotional leaving her at the airport that morning.”
“My husband would come to the airport and meet me, and so this was the first time in all my years of traveling, so I was very emotional,” she added. Jerome describes his father as a gentle giant because he played a major role in his success.
“Without his support, I probably wouldn’t be here today. And that was why me flying him was always such an important thing, because I wanted him to see, hey, this is what you invested in all these years, come and see what it is … but he was loving, caring, very supportive,” he said.
“He provided for us in an immense capacity that I’m hoping one day, when I do have my own family, I’m able to replicate that in some capacity,” he added.
