A 13-year-old genius boy is accepted to Ghana University after receiving five As in the WAEC.
AFRICA | Ghana University admits a 13-year-old brilliant youngster who receives 5As in WAEC.
Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise, a 13-year-old kid who excelled in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), made history by being accepted to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana.
Adio has a strong track record of academic success. He became one of the youngest undergraduates at KNUST for the 2024 academic year after receiving five A1s, including in mathematics and physics, and one B.
He pursued a bachelor’s degree in Physics with the goal of going deeper into Mechanics, his favorite field of study, because of his innate curiosity and passion for learning.
“I adore the physics and the calculations. Experiments allow you to experience them. You can do tests with electricity, but you can’t see the electrons moving,” he remarked.
Adio’s educational path started early because he was born into a household of educators, with a mother who teaches in primary school and a father who teaches economics. As he became older, he came to understand the constraints of his original professional goal of becoming a pilot.
He decided to pursue physics instead, which gave him the opportunity to investigate a variety of scientific domains before focusing on just one. “I’ll find out what my actual interests are if I study physics. I’ll choose between mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering by my third or fourth year,” he stated.

Because of his exceptional academic abilities, Adio was able to bypass several grade levels during his schooling. Because of his outstanding skills, he was able to avoid Forms 2 and 3 at St. Cyprian’s Minor Seminary Senior High School.
He took an entrance exam to get into senior high school instead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
I was in primary four by the time I was seven years old, having begun school at the age of two. I went directly to primary six instead of main five. I completed JHS 1 and subsequently passed an admission exam to enroll at St. Cyprian’s Minor Seminary because I skipped JHS 2 and JHS 3 at Starplex Academy,” he recalled.
Adio has adapted to university life effectively, even though he is far younger than his peers. Although his age first made him feel frightened in senior high school, he soon adjusted, and the move to university has gone even more smoothly.
“I don’t think there is much of a difference. It’s just typical,” he remarked. I was a little apprehensive when I initially arrived at SHS, but I eventually adapted. It doesn’t feel any different to be here at KNUST with older students now,” he continued.
