A young Nigerian man establishes a record by earning a PhD at age 21.
One of the world’s youngest PhD recipients, Akinyele Aminu, is a remarkable African man who has achieved a remarkable milestone.
Nigerian-born Akinyele Aminu received his PhD at age 21 from the University of Pittsburgh in the United States. He received an exceptional first-class degree upon graduating from Mountain Top University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature.
He described how, at a very young age, he started attending school. When I reached elementary school, I completed every lesson before receiving a double promotion from primary two to primary four. He explained to Punch, “I finished my secondary schooling and was accepted to the university at the age of 14—the same year I graduated from secondary school.

Akinyele Aminu finished his bachelor’s degree at the age of 18. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Linguistics from Covenant University, he relocated to the University of Pittsburgh in the United States to pursue a Doctorate in Linguistics.
Aminu celebrated his accomplishment on LinkedIn, stating that he received fellowships that covered all of his expenses at the University of Pittsburgh, including tuition.
I’m thrilled to report that, at the age of 21, I’ve started my doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh! I received a fellowship that covers all of my fees and tuition in appreciation of my academic achievements,” he posted on LinkedIn.
Aminu expressed gratitude to every organization that has given him scholarships during his academic career. In hindsight, I have received numerous scholarships throughout my life, and I give God the praise for this. I can declare with sincere thanks to God that I am making my way to the Promised Land gradually but steadily,” he stated.
Additionally, he expressed gratitude to his parents for their incalculable support. Aminu clarified his interest in linguistics, focusing on discourse analysis, computational linguistics, neurolinguistics, and sociolinguistics.
I have a doctorate in linguistics, and my areas of interest are discourse analysis, neurolinguistics, computational linguistics, and sociolinguistics. “I’m excited to explore research with some of the most brilliant minds in the world in one of America’s most influential institutions,” he continued.
