The United Nations Office of Legal Affairs’ Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (“OLA/DOALOS”) is the driving force behind the UN Nippon Foundation Fellowship Program.
The fully financed three-month fellowship program covers round-trip economy class airfare, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend.

In order to strengthen management frameworks, the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship offers advanced training in ocean affairs, the law of the sea, and allied fields, such as marine science, to government officials and other mid-level professionals from developing nations.

This Fellowship specifically seeks to increase human capacity to assist in the creation of maritime governance frameworks required to:
Implement the SDGs, particularly SDG 14, with an emphasis on creating sustainable blue economies, addressing environmental impacts (particularly the devastating effects of ocean plastic), building resilience to climate change, and taking gender issues into account. Address the triple planetary crisis (pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change). Effectively implement UNCLOS, its implementing agreements, including the BBNJ Agreement, and related instruments.
Qualifications for the 2025 United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship:
In order to be eligible for the Program, you need to:
A mid-level professional from a national government organ of a developing state, or another governmental or non-governmental agency in such a state, that deals directly with ocean affairs issues must be between the ages of 25 and 40, have successfully completed their first university degree, and exhibit the ability to conduct independent advanced academic research and study. Additionally, their position must enable them to directly assist their country in the formulation and/or implementation of policy in this area.

- Have a research and study plan in place that will directly support the creation and/or execution of ocean affairs and law of the sea policies and initiatives in your country.
- Unless the Division specifies otherwise, be released from all non-Fellowship commitments for the duration of the Fellowship.
The candidate must clearly establish on the application forms that they meet the aforementioned requirements, and a nominating authority must confirm this. To ensure gender parity in the selection process, women candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

•The full application must be submitted by March 30, 2025.

• Applications that are not complete or sent late will not be accepted.
• By the end of May 2025, the chosen candidates will get individual notifications of their awards, which will then be displayed on the Fellowship website’s News section.
