An 83-year-old Black lady becomes the oldest graduate of a US university with a PhD.
Marie Fowler, an 83-year-old lady, received her doctorate in divinity, setting a record as the oldest graduate in Howard University history.
At Howard University School of Divinity in the United States, Marie Fowler earned her doctorate in divinity. She said that receiving her doctorate in divinity was a divine calling.
Since I entered school after being out of school since 1959, I never imagined that I would stay for more than maybe one semester. She remarked, “I wasn’t even sure if I could even retain information.”

Prior to spending three years at Howard University for her PhD, she had previously earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees from Maple Springs Baptist Bible College and Seminary.
According to Marie, at first, she didn’t think she would finish school. Since I entered school after being out of school since 1959, I never imagined that I would stay for more than maybe one semester. She remarked, “I wasn’t even sure if I could even retain information.”
She admitted that she had financial and personal doubts at this point in her life, but Fowler claimed that her perseverance was fueled by her parents’ experiences and her father’s comments, which are still fresh in her mind.
She claimed that even though she had concerns about her skills and financial situation at this point in her life, her father’s advice and her parents’ experiences kept inspiring her to keep going.
It was against the law for my parents to learn to read and write when they were born. In order to prevent my dad from writing that X, we taught him how to read, write, and sign his name,” she said.
Marie claimed that by completing her doctorate in three years, she surpassed her own expectations. It’s never too late, I want to emphasize. I want people to understand that I’m eighty-three, so if I can do it, why can’t you?” she added.
Marie made a lasting impression with her lively energy and tenacity while attending Howard University. She is “the life of the party,” according to Dr. Alice Ogden Bellis, a professor of the Hebrew Bible. She went on to say that Marie came here knowing what she wanted and did it.
