A bright Nigerian woman who is the first in her family to graduate after selling bean cakes to pay for her schooling
Jideobi Amaka, a talented Nigerian woman who supports herself via the sale of bean cake (Akara), has finally earned her degree from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria.
Amaka graduated from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nigeria with a bachelor’s degree in guidance and counseling. She proudly celebrated her accomplishment of receiving the degree through her hard work on LinkedIn.

After graduating from high school, she said she relocated from her hamlet to a more developed area for greener pasteurs, but she was unable to find employment. According to Amaka, she made the decision to follow in her mother’s footsteps and start selling bean cakes, also known as akara, in their community.
She claimed that after starting the company with 20,000 naira, it was able to expand till she was accepted to Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Amaka was able to enroll in the university using the money she made from the business.
Amaka said that because she was running the firm full-time, it was difficult to balance her education with the business.
She claimed that during the five years she has been in company, Akara has helped to fund all facets of her life, including her studies. Amaka talked about how happy she was to have finally realized her ambition.
It’s safe to say that the five years I spent selling akara to pay for my education weren’t in vain. This is my greatest accomplishment and biggest flex, and I will continue to celebrate because it is worth it,” she said.
Amaka expressed her satisfaction at having kept her word to her parents. She said that the accomplishment made her the first member of her family to earn a university degree.
