A 24-year-old Nigerian man becomes the first-ever first-class graduate of Japan University, shattering a 50-year-old record.
Ufot Ekong, a 24-year-old Nigerian, became the first student to graduate with first-class honors, breaking a 50-year-old record held by Tokai University in Japan.
At Tokai University in Japan, Ufot Ekong earned a stellar 5.00 grade point average and first class honors for his bachelor’s degree in robotics and electrical engineering.
Ufot was named the overall best-graduating student and became the first student to graduate with a cumulative grade point since the university’s founding.
In addition to making history when he graduated, during his first semester at the university, he broke a 30-year-old record for solving a mathematical equation that had been unsolvable for the previous 30 years.
He received the Japanese Language Award for Foreigners and the Faculty of Engineering’s Best Engineering Student Award for Undergraduates. For his outstanding academic performance in the university, he received a total of six honors.
Additionally, Ufot received the esteemed prize for the best student overall from the university president. In the history of the school, he is the first Nigerian to get the honor.

Ufot attended the same Tokai University in Japan to earn his master’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering after earning his bachelor’s. At the university, he also earned a PhD in motor drives and power electronics.

He told Youth Alive that he managed to pay for his education by working two jobs and attending school, and he still received great scores upon graduating.
Fluent in English, Japanese, French, Yoruba, and Ibibio, he is multilingual. He created an electric vehicle with a top speed of 128 kilometers per hour while pursuing his doctorate. The vehicle runs on fully charged batteries.
According to Ufot, he spends his leisure time playing the saxophone in addition to studying. Additionally, he founded Strictly African Japan, a Tokyo-based retail and accessory store that introduces Japanese people to aspects of African culture.
