After saving a classmate from choking to death at a US school, an 8-year-old boy receives a hero award.

After saving the life of a student who choked on food at Lakeview Elementary School in Norman, Oklahoma, in the United States, an 8-year-old child named Garrett Brown was recognized as a hero.

According to Jordan Nguyen, a music instructor at the school, the incident happened at lunch. The children adore chicken nuggets, and it was chicken nugget day. However, the worst fear for a parent and teacher occurred at that meal, Nguyen said Good Morning America.

She claims that Cashton York, a third-grader at the school, “took a bite and started choking” while he was occupied with his lunch with his pals. She explained, “He was unable to breathe.”

Nguyen, the oldest person in the room, explained that she was at the other end of the room and had to run to the scene of the incident when his friends called for help right away. “I was on the other side of the cafeteria and when I heard them scream, I ran to the students, but there was one student, Garrett, who went way beyond just shouting for help,” she said. Prior to arriving at the scene, Cashton York’s classmate Garrett Brown began performing the Heimlich manoeuvre on his classmate.

Rather than yelling, Nguyen recalled, “he leaped to the opposite side of the table, moved behind Cashton, and performed a couple Heimlich thrusts. It only took about two thrusts and he was able to dislodge the food.” “The food had already come loose by the time I got to Cashton, and he was breathing normally again.”

One kind of first aid procedure is the Heimlich maneuver, which entails either back strikes, abdominal thrusts, or both. Garrett Brown explained that he learnt the method from his father, which allowed him to administer first aid to his classmate in a flash.

After it was finished, we all exhaled and asked ourselves, “Did that just happen? Was that real? Did this actually just occur? And in order to confirm that “Oh, that is what happened,” we had to revisit and view the security tape. Oh my god. It was quite astounding. Nguyen remembered.

Tiffany Smith, Cashton’s mother, told KOCO that she was grateful Garrett was able to respond quickly when her son began to choke.

Knowing that my child could have choked to death on food at school while you were out in a matter of seconds was really frightening. There are not enough words to express how thankful I am that you saved him. “Well,” Smith said.

At the school assembly, Garrett was recognized by Lakeview Elementary for his prompt efforts in saving his friend. On behalf of the school, Nguyen gave Garrett a unique “Hero Award” certificate.
