Eight months pregnant A woman competes in Taekwondo and defeats rivals to win a gold medal.
Aminat Idrees, a Nigerian martial artist who is eight months pregnant, broke all previous records by defeating every competitor to win the Nigerian National Sports Festival.
Aminat Idrees, who competed on behalf of Lagos State, was a superb Taekwondo fighter prior to her marriage in 2020. She explained that she should have entered the tournament before to being pregnant, but the country’s lockdown at the time delayed the completion.
Despite being eight months pregnant, she astonished many people worldwide with her incredible performance in the Taekwondo poomsae championship. She took home gold in the pair poomsae, silver in the team poomsae, and bronze in the individual poomsae for her exceptional performance.

She made headlines all over the world for her remarkable performance, which was noteworthy for a pregnant woman. For me, it’s such a privilege. After training a few times, I just made the decision to give it a shot.It’s a great feeling. Idrees told reporters, “I always enjoyed training before I got pregnant, so it didn’t seem different with pregnancy.”

She clarified that before entering the competition, she prayed, asked her husband for permission, spoke with her physicians, and then received approval from the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation.

“I decided to participate in this tournament because I know that it is something I could do,” Aminat Idrees said in reference to her involvement. I’ve been training regularly, and both during and after training, there hasn’t been much problem. Just as much as I believe in myself, so do my coaches. Despite being pregnant, I was psychologically and physically prepared for the event because it was only a display and not warfare.
Additionally, the festival’s main poomsae events lasted roughly two hours, which is more in line with how long I often train, so it was just like any other training day, she continued.
Whether or not she is pregnant, Aminat Idrees has won medals before. She won gold in the team poomsae at the 2012 sports festival, her first major medal at the age of 18.
Since then, she has consistently taken home medals from competitions in kyorugi (fighting) and poomsae (demonstration), the Nigerian National Sports Festival, the Korean Ambassadors’ Cup, and the IBILE Games, Lagos State’s yearly sporting event.
“They knew I had experience because this is not the first time I have won medals in Poomsae,” Aminat Idrees told ESPN.
“It’s unlikely that officials would permit her to compete while pregnant if I were a novice. However, I have been doing it, so they have faith in me,” she continued.
