Nigeria’s first female PhD holder and VC clocks in at 89
On December 16, 2021, Professor Grace Alele-Williams, the first female PhD recipient in Nigeria, turned 89 years old.
Because of her academic accomplishments, Professor Grace Alele-Williams, a mathematics education professor, became the first female vice chancellor and the first female doctorate holder in Nigeria.
In 1963, she earned her doctorate from the University of Chicago, and in 1976, the University of Lagos hired her as a mathematics professor. In 1985, Prof. Grace Alele Williams became the first female vice-chancellor of a Nigerian university after rising through the ranks at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari celebrated her new age and thanked the educator on her many years of accomplishments. “Prof. Grace Alele-Williams is an inspiration who used her resources to create opportunities for other women, especially in getting education,” he wrote in his congratulations statement.

The former Vice-Chancellor, whose honors include being a Fellow of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria, a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Education, the recipient of the merit award from old Bendel State in Nigeria, the regional Vice-President for Africa of the Third World Organization for Women in Science, the Chairman of the African Mathematical Union Commission for Women in Mathematics, and the first President of the African Mathematical Union Commission on Women in Mathematics, joins President Buhari in celebrating alongside his family, friends, and academics.
