Details of the AI4D Africa Scholarship:

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) have awarded a grant to the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) to fund the AI4D Scholarship for female applicants in sub-Saharan Africa.

Both the research of Early Career Academics in AI & ML and the training of PhD students in AI & ML will be supported by the funding. This program’s research must focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and address any of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The goal of the scholarship program is to distribute the recipients evenly among Francophone, Anglophone, and Lusophone sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, an attempt will be made to attain equitable distribution by region. Responsible AI must be followed by the supported studies.

PhD students in Category 1 are registered.

Candidates who are already enrolled in a PhD program and who have completed their coursework and research ideas will be the ones invited. All universities that offer PhD programs in artificial intelligence (or any of its variants) are eligible to apply. Scholarships will be awarded over a two-year term. The candidates and proposals will be chosen only on the basis of their quality.

 

Eligibility requirements:

• All candidates must have completed coursework and a research proposal, and they must be enrolled in an AI study (machine learning, expert systems, natural language processing, intelligent robotics, etc.) under a supervisor. A copy of the PhD studies admission letter and a letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor must be attached.
• All candidates should have drive and dedication to pursuing an academic career in addition to having strong academic credentials.
• Every applicant should be well-versed in the language used at their host university for instruction. Portuguese or French.
• All applicants must be citizens or long-term inhabitants of a sub-Saharan countries that qualifies.
A partial scholarship of up to US $28,000 will be awarded to each successful student, as indicated below;

  • Two-year tuition costs of up to $4,000.
  • Research projects worth up to $24,000

Early Career Academics (Category 3)

This will primarily target ECAs with the ability to mentor MSc and PhD students.

 

Qualifications

  • As of the application, each candidate must have completed a PhD program in AI and ML within the previous three to five years.

All candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of an eligible sub-Saharan countries, possess strong academic qualifications, and have a desire and dedication to pursue a career in academia.

The maximum scholarship amount for each successful ECA is $41,500 USD. This will include:

Research infrastructure can cost up to $10,000, and research expenses can reach $25,000.

  • The expense of travel can reach $2,000.
  • Two MSc students’ tuition costs for two years can reach $4,000 ($2,000 per student).

The funding period would be two years.
