After four years, a brave Nigerian woman named Badmus Falilat left her undergraduate studies at the University of Lagos in South West Nigeria to pursue a new undergraduate degree at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences in Finland.

Badmus Falilat enrolled in the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Nigeria, with the goal of earning her bachelor’s degree after four years of study. However, she clarified that she had to drop out of the program after three academic sessions, or four years in real time during the protracted ASUU strike in 2020.
All of the academic staff in Nigerian universities are members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Regarding finance and amenities for the universities, they have long been at odds with the Nigerian government. Academic activity at Nigerian universities halt whenever ASUU goes on strike.
Falilat talked about how she became irritated with the widespread strike and how her determination to earn a bachelor’s degree kept her going.
“Leaving my three-year plus Unilag program after four years to start over in another country was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life.”
“I was broken by the 2020 ASUU strike. My experience wasn’t the best before that; the Nigerian Federal University system nearly claimed my life, but I was adamant about finishing my degree before going to another school,” she stated on Twitter.
She explained how she arrived in Finland, which she called a completely different experience, saying that she had originally intended to travel to the UK but was told to choose Finland instead due to the country’s higher cost of living.
“The UK was my first choice, but I can’t afford to live there.” One evening, I spoke with @Deshsmalls, and he informed me about Finland. Even though it was November or December, I decided in January to go ahead and do it.
The following year, I completed my application and was granted a residence permit. I struggled with anxiety a lot, so I couldn’t talk to anyone but my supervisor about it because it felt like a strange concept.
“As I balanced working full-time, applying to Finland, and Unilag, I questioned whether I was making the correct decision. Will it be worthwhile? Although it was a difficult choice, I can state with certainty that the experience is unique and that it was worthwhile for me. She wrote, “Yes, khaki isn’t leather.”
