AMERICA | A 16-year-old woman who became the first doctor in her family works hard to acquire a pharmacy degree with a 4.00 GPA.
Dacorsha Sutton, a resolute young woman, has overcome all obstacles to attain extraordinary success and obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) from Larkin University in Florida, USA.
Her feat is even more noteworthy as it makes her the first doctor in her family. Dacorsha started her academic career at the University of Toledo in Ohio, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science.
She reflected on her experience on Instagram, sharing that she gave birth during her senior year of high school and became a mother at the age of 16.
Dacorsha, who faced several obstacles, described the prejudice she experienced at her Catholic high school. Because of her pregnancy, she was kicked out of extracurricular activities and leadership programs, which was a terrible experience that made her feel alone.
She struggled in college as well, starting with a 1.2 GPA in her first semester. Dacorsha persisted even after losing her full-ride scholarship, receiving criticism from teachers and advisors, and having to retake a number of unsuccessful classes.
She ultimately earned an outstanding 4.71 GPA at graduation. “I want to show other teen mothers that it’s never too late, and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you,” she said, sharing her story with Essence and describing her motivation. How we respond to our mistakes defines who we are, not our mistakes themselves.
On Instagram, Dacorsha celebrated her most recent accomplishment and thanked everyone for their support during her journey. “I want to express my gratitude to everyone who sent me flowers while I was still living. I can feel the love and abundance of support I’ve received along the way,” she stated.
Dacorsha hopes that by sharing her experience, people will be motivated and reminded that challenges can be conquered. “Until someone made it happen, everything was impossible,” she remarked.
