For the 2025–2026 academic year, the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) has formally opened the application process for its Master’s and PhD programs in climate change.
Students from twelve West African nations are eligible to apply for the WASCAL Scholarship. This represents yet another important step in empowering the region’s future climate leaders.
The pressing need for climate resilience in West Africa is still being addressed by the WASCAL Climate Change Programs, which provide PhD and Master’s degrees.
These programs, which are supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and prominent German universities, provide outstanding scholarship opportunities for eligible students.
German Government Wascal Scholarship 2024 Requirements
As a citizen of one of the following WASCAL member nations (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, The Gambia, or Togo), you will be eligible to apply for the German Government Wascal Scholarship 2024: Other ECOWAS member nations may be admitted as self-funded students based on availability.
- Possess a bachelor’s degree in Geography, Biological Sciences, Oceanography, Fishing or Livestock Engineering, or Sciences of the Atmosphere, or other related discipline.
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, physics, chemistry, health sciences, meteorology and climate science, geography, biological sciences, geoscience, environmental sciences, economics, agriculture, mathematics, statistics, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or electronic engineering is required of applicants to the Master Research Program in Informatics for Climate Change.
- Speak English at a minimum of an intermediate level.
German Government Wascal Scholarship 2024 Benefits
The scholarship covers the following:
- a monthly stipend to pay for living expenses and housing throughout the study time;
- payment of tuition at the university;
- tickets for round-trip travel;
- lodging
- Visit Germany and a few other West African nations.
- funding for research;
- During the session, a personal laptop computer will be loaned.
Documents Needed for the 2024 Wascal Scholarship
Candidates must be prepared to submit the following paperwork in order to apply:
Academic transcripts, curriculum vitae, and application forms
• SSCE Certificate (Anglophone Countries) or WASSCE Certificate
• Two recommendation letters from researchers or professors, preferably senior researchers or associate professors.
• A copy of the passport photo page and an identity document
• A motivational letter, no more than two pages.
• A copy of the degree certificate from the university
• A copy of your English proficiency certificate or, alternatively, a statement outlining and defending your self-evaluation in relation to English competency.
• If applicable, evidence of professional experience in the course’s pertinent field.
• A signed pledge to pay a thirty-euro registration fee in the event of admission.
NOTE: Each program has different requirements for paperwork.
