Qualifications for the Excellence Scholarship at Leiden University
In order to be eligible for a Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LexS), applicants need to meet all of the standards listed below:
English is a required language, and international students from non-EU/EEA nations are eligible.
• The student must have demonstrated exceptional study skills in previous coursework that are pertinent to the program they want to enroll in. The student will rank in the top 10% for the appropriate program pursued overseas, as a sign.
In order to be considered for a Master’s program, students must have demonstrated exceptional academic performance in their prior coursework. The fact that the student ranks in the top 10% of graduates from their prior program of study serves as an indication. Note: this information is only meant to show the degree of competition; verification of ranking is not necessary.
• The student will not be eligible for assistance under the Dutch “Studiefinanciering” system of study grants and loans since they do not possess a passport from the EU or EEA. For additional details, please visit www.duo.nl. The Advanced Masters program is exempt from this; applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply for the LExS.
If a student changes their degree program while they are enrolled in classes, there is no certainty that the LExS will continue. Each request will be examined individually, and the Faculty Selection Committee or committees will make the final decision. The LExS scholarship will be canceled and the student will need to reapply if the change occurs before they have signed up for the study program. The LExS is only good for the duration of the student’s degree program and while they are enrolled full-time at Leiden University.
According to the decision letter, an LExS awarded for the academic year cannot be carried over to the next intake or to another academic year. The LExS will be canceled if a student who has been granted one for the September (or February) intake chooses to delay their involvement in the study program. Each request will be examined individually, and the Faculty Selection Committee or committees will make the final decision.
With the exception of partial scholarships, which require prior written confirmation, the student is not eligible to obtain any further full scholarships for the same program. If another full scholarship, such as one from the Netherlands Fellowship Program, Jean Monnet, etc., has been offered and accepted, the student should let Leiden University know.
In order to maintain the right to LExS for the subsequent academic year, students enrolled in programs longer than a year must earn at least 60 ECTS in their first year of study. The Leiden University Selection Committee shall determine the period and method for measuring progress in cases where there is any doubt regarding the amount of ECTS requirements for good development.A student is permitted to apply for multiple scholarships simultaneously. Nevertheless, scholarships offered or supported by Leiden University cannot be combined. This relates to the CEU Praesidium Libertatis and Orange Tulip-China scholarship programs. Additionally, the LExS cannot be combined with any other scholarship that Leiden University may provide or support in the near future, or with scholarships that are granted under a bilateral agreement with educational institutions. The student must also abide by Dutch visa laws.
• Students who are accepted into a second Master program at Leiden University will not receive the LExS, unless they are enrolling for a Master program that requires a specific prior Master program or work experience.
• Throughout the academic year, Leiden University should be informed as soon as feasible of any changes to nationality, the type of residence permit, and/or potential “Studiefinanciering” funding.
Requests for tuition reimbursement will be sent to Leiden University and analogs to the “Regeling inschrijving, college-en examengeld” for the relevant academic year if the student ends their studies early. The de-registration form should be sent to Leiden University by the student. The student will then get a pro rata reimbursement of the tuition cost less the scholarship, if applicable.
• The student will actively participate in initiatives to promote the LExS while enrolled at Leiden University.
• The student must complete the “Acceptance Form LExS” in order to accept the awarded LExS scholarship.
