2025 National Institute of Genetics Postdoctoral Fellowship

International students can apply for the fully funded NIG Postdoctoral Fellowship 2025. Employment lasts for a maximum of three years from the date of hire, with yearly reappointments. An annual income of approximately 4,100,000 JPY will be provided by this fellowship, which will also cover taxes, mutual society health insurance, compensation insurance, and a conditional commuting allowance.
Young, talented researchers are hired by the National Institute of Genetics (hereinafter, “NIG”) as NIG postdoctoral research fellows (hereinafter, “NIG postdocs”), who participate in research activities at the institute for a set period of time with the goal of advancing NIG research and developing researchers with exceptional research skills.
The Ministry of Education founded the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) in 1949 to teach and promote basic genetics research and theory through an integrated and applied study.

Qualifications for the NIG Postdoctoral Fellowship
The following criteria must be met in order for the candidate to be eligible for the NIG Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institute of Genetics in Japan:
English is the required language, and all nations worldwide are eligible.
• Those who have earned a PhD degree (or its equivalent) or are anticipated to do so;
• Those who possess the research abilities necessary to work on genetics initiatives. Prior to the date of arrival at the position, the degree must be obtained.
Applicants who were previously enrolled in NIG as of March 31, 2023, are not eligible to apply. Postdocs, NIG technical staff, and graduate students (at the Department of Genetics, SOKENDAI) are not eligible to apply. Internships and other temporary trips are not included.
• It is anticipated that NIG postdocs will favorably impact the vitalization of all NIG research. For instance, students must actively participate in NIG colloquia, NIG retreats, and NIG poster sessions. Because of this, research plans that call for a prolonged stay at a university or institute outside of NIG are typically not approved.
Publications must acknowledge the support from the NIG postdoc funding.
• At the conclusion of their employment period, NIG postdocs must report their accomplishments at the NIG colloquium.

To apply for an NIG Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institute of Genetics in Japan, please follow these guidelines:
(1) After discussing your research proposal with your potential principal investigator, you should email the PDF versions of the following documents.
2) Get the following paperwork ready. Forms 1 through 4 are available for download from the link. When preparing the documentation, bear the following points in mind.
• Applications must be submitted in either English or Japanese.
• Formats 2 and 4 allow the use of color and the insertion of figures.
• Don’t alter the amount of pages, size (A4), or layout.
• Two letters of recommendation from the host PI and supervisor.
