International Students’ Scholarship from the Vice-Chancellor
In 2024 or 2025, international undergraduate students residing in New Zealand or studying remotely from outside the country will be enrolled at the University of Otago.
International Master’s Research Scholarship at the University of Otago
Funding for overseas master’s students enrolled in the University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship program is provided by the University of Otago overseas Research Master’s Scholarship.
Funding for PhD candidates at the University of Otago is made available through the University of Otago PhD Scholarship.
Both domestic and foreign students can apply for the scholarship. Both the PhD and professional doctorate candidates are encouraged to apply.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students is one of the scholarships offered by the University of Otago.
• The Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students contributes NZ$10,000 toward tuition for a program that qualifies.
• 8 scholarships are available:
• University of Otago International Master’s Research Scholarship • NZ$17,172 annual stipend and a one-year tuition fee waiver capped at the domestic rate for Master’s studies (excluding student services charge and insurance)
Scholarship for Doctoral Studies at the University of Otago
- Doctor of Philosophy: NZ$30,696 annual stipend and a 36-month waiver of domestic tuition fees (insurance and student services fees not included). Professional Doctorates (DClinDent, DMA, DBA, EDd): NZ$30,696 annual stipend and a 36-month tuition fee remission at the domestic rate (insurance and student services fees excluded).
Qualifications for Scholarships at the University of Otago
In order to be eligible for the University of Otago Scholarships, the applicant needs to meet each of the requirements listed below:
• English is the required language.
• All nations in the world are eligible.
• The International Students’ Scholarship of the Vice-Chancellor
• Foreign students who are not nationals, permanent residents, or holders of an Australian or New Zealand resident visa; and
• Have been admitted to a university by:
- Completing Year 12 or Year 13 at a New Zealand school, or in the process of doing so, or enrolling in an equivalent foundational course at a New Zealand university
2. The accomplishment of an internationally recognized credential, such as the International Baccalaureate, ATAR, or A Levels, in New Zealand or in a high school abroad; or
3. Fulfilling additional international entrance requirements listed on the Otago website; and
• Not having previously completed any coursework at a university in New Zealand; and
• Being liable for paying international tuition fees; and
• Being qualified to apply for and plan to enroll full-time in the first year of an eligible program.

International Students’ Scholarship from the Vice-Chancellor
The University of Otago Entrance Scholarship is the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for International Students. Therefore, for terms that typically apply to all Entrance Scholarships, see the Entrance Scholarship Terms and Conditions.
Although the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship for International candidates does not have an application process, candidates are highly encouraged to apply for other entrance scholarships before the deadline because they may be eligible for them.
International Master’s Research Scholarship at the University of Otago
Scholarship applications are submitted electronically via the university’s website. After submitting an application for admission to the necessary qualification, a scholarship application invitation is delivered. Applications can be submitted at any time and are often submitted with the application for admission to the relevant program.
When an applicant is working toward a Master’s degree and must complete papers before beginning a thesis, they should often apply after finishing those papers. Once enrollment in the Master’s degree thesis component is complete, an invitation will be given.

Doctoral scholarship applications are accepted year-round and are submitted online using the eVision portal. You will receive an alert in your student portal encouraging you to apply for a scholarship after submitting your application for admission to your program.
