After 70 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, making her the country’s longest-reigning monarch.
When the 25-year-old Queen took the throne in 1952, she saw a significant shift in British and global society. She passed away at Balmoral at the age of 96.
Prince Charles, the former Prince of Wales and her eldest son, will succeed her as King of the United Kingdom and head of state for 14 Commonwealth states. The King said in a statement: “My mother, Her Majesty the Queen, passed away, and I and my entire family are deeply saddened by this.
“We are very saddened by the loss of a beloved mother and revered sovereign. I am aware that her passing will be profoundly felt by innumerable individuals worldwide, as well as throughout the nation, the Realms, and the Commonwealth,” he continued.
