Eamon demonstrated his dedication by helping the less fortunate while serving in a variety of roles within the St. Vincent de Paul Society. His generosity was evident in the 1960s when he started helping many migrants and international students. By finding them permanent housing and acquainting them with the local way of life, Eamon became a guiding force for these people, helping them integrate into New Zealand society. In his capacity as a guardian, he went above and beyond to safeguard the general well-being of numerous international students in Christchurch.
He continued to advocate after that. Eamon took on an advisory position in the Canterbury Malaysian & Singaporean Student Association in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was instrumental in helping Indo-Chinese immigrants reach New Zealand, putting in endless effort to bring families together who had been split up in camps. Eamon spent days conducting in-depth research and writing letters, frequently overcoming administrative and regulatory barriers to ensure that families were reunited. He carried on his compassionate legacy by actively participating in welcoming ethnic minorities even in his nineties.
Over the course of his more than 50-year career, Eamon Molloy made a lasting impression on the community, especially on ethnic populations. He was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in November 2009, shortly before his death, in recognition of his commitment.

Qualifications for Scholarships in Honor of Eamon Molloy
The candidate must meet each of the standards listed below in order to be eligible for an Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship:
• English is the required language.
• Eligible Countries: University of Canterbury undergraduate Asian students
• Candidates must be either (1) citizens of the People’s Republic of China, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, Hong Kong permanent identity cards, or (1) citizens of Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, or the Philippines. Additionally, applicants must be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens or have a residence class visa issued by Aotearoa New Zealand.
Academic excellence, financial need, and leadership and personal qualities that show the applicant’s potential for success in life, as shown in a personal statement outlining his or her traits, accomplishments, and goals, will all be taken into consideration when making the selection.
• Recipients must be overseas students attending full-time in their second, third, or fourth year of an undergraduate degree program who are paying full tuition.
• The scholarship can be maintained for a full year.
• Unless the terms of the other award prohibit it, the scholarship can be co-tenable with any other grant.
- In the event where a recipient’s enrolment in the year of tenure no longer meets the conditions
- specified above, the scholarship is withdrawn and any paid funds may be recovered.
- Continuation of a scholarship is conditional on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the University’s statutes and regulations.
